On May 9 came into force the new Law on Traffic and Road Safety. Among the changes contained in the new law, many would have to be cleared with the update of the General Circulation Regulate that spend time waiting and could arrive before the end of the year. With what we had not counted on is the way in which the new rules will affect classic cars.
Currently in Spain for a vehicle to be considered Classic cars, has to spend more than 25 years from date of first registration. From that age as the tax burden is lower in the IVTM many Spanish municipalities are given the opportunity to register the vehicle as historic, which offers even more advantages. But it seems that from next year 30 years will be required for a vehicle to be considered classic. And that’s not all.
Classic cars have to be 30 years
We might think it’s another one of those government revenue-raising measures, but while leaders already had the idea of raising the age, the initiative has been supported by the Spanish Federation of Vintage Vehicles. In July and DGT had a meeting where these issues were discussed and it was agreed that the classic cars have to be 30 years, as it could be applied gradually. Most European countries put at least these 30 years, we were privileged in Spain.
Now I do not know how the situation will remain the classics to the new Rules of the road to be published in the Official Gazette. There are several issues that revolve more around this issue, as the possibility that annually until 2020 and add another year to the requirement for a classic car, increasing the figure to 35 in that year. This certainly very noticeably affect many users. In my case months away, so that with the current legislation, my Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is considered classic, but so would lack enacted 10 years.
Other topics treated between Spanish Federation of Vintage Vehicles and DGT were historical events regularly, which will continue as usual must respect the speed of 50 km / h and the road traffic, the speed must be adapted to the climatic conditions or route. Greater control of the events will be required.
What about the classic cars that will cease to be?
But the main question that we all have is what wills happen to those classic cars with the current regulations are considered as such but with the coming cease to be. It is hoped that these particular cases are exempt from the rules, at least those with a historical license plate.
And municipal taxes? Many Spanish towns or simply suppress IVTM for historical and with over 25 years of outstanding classic cars. It may be that with the new general circulation regulates some municipalities begin implementing the 30-year exemption (full or partial) and this represents a setback for those with vehicles that strip is left in no man’s land.
