Toyota has reported the imminent start of the road test hybrid and hydrogen vehicles equipped with silicon carbide semiconductors.

Semiconductors used in the power control unit and supply power from the battery to the motor for controlling the speed of movement of the machine, and is redirected back into the battery that energy which is released during deceleration.

The current silicon semiconductors forming almost 20% of total electricity consumption in hybrid cars. Improving the efficiency of this unit will significantly improve the overall efficiency of the power plant.

Toyota has established a new type of semiconductors in voltage boost converter and inverter motor prototype hybrid Camry. The company will collect data on voltage of the power control unit, features and test drive the pace car and able to ambient temperature.

The results obtained are comparable with current semiconductor to determine the degree of effectiveness of the new development.

In February the test hybrid Camry with new semiconductors will begin in the city of Toyota in Aichi Prefecture. It should be noted that the company since early January testing similar technology on a city bus with a hydrogen power plant that runs in the said town.
